Have you ever caught yourself or another person saying, “it’s just the way I’ve always done it”. Now, let’s not dismiss the importance of tried and tested methods to complete a task or process. However, expanding upon the principle of a ‘growth mindset’, it’s worthwhile pausing and considering if there is another way.

Enter the principle of Neuroplasticity.

Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections in response to experiences and learning. This suggests you can consciously work to rewire your brain to change habits, overcome challenges, and improve cognitive functions. 

How Neuroplasticity Works

  • Rewiring Neural Pathways:

Neuroplasticity involves the creation of new neural pathways and the strengthening of existing ones. 

  • Experience-Dependent:

The brain’s ability to change is heavily influenced by new/broader experiences, along with intentional or unexpected learning. 

  • Targeted Training:

Engaging in specific activities and exercises permits individuals to stimulate neuroplasticity and promote positive changes in the brain. 

Strategies for Brain Retraining

  • Learning new skills:

Challenge yourself with new activities and learning new information to stimulate brain adaptation and growth. 

  • Mindfulness and meditation:

Consciously adopt these practices into your week to become more aware of your thoughts and emotions, allowing you to consciously redirect your focus. 

  • Cognitive training:

Engage in activities that challenge your cognitive abilities, such as puzzles, brain games, and problem-solving exercises. 

  • Physical exercise:

Regular physical activity can promote neuroplasticity and improve overall brain health. (Consider changing your running route, gym routine, etc.)

  • Social interaction:

Engaging in social activities and conversations on alternative topics or with different individuals, can stimulate new neural connections.

By actively engaging in these strategies, individuals can harness the power of neuroplasticity to retrain their brains, improve cognitive function, and promote positive, desirable changes in their lives.
