grit: (noun) ‘a quality that describes someone who demonstrates passion and perseverance to persist toward an objective, even in the face of adversity’.
Upon launching her book GRIT, author and psychologist Angela Duckworth shone some light on why some people enjoy considerable success, while others – who have been given the same opportunities – don’t reach the same heights.
As the definition above suggests, GRIT is a personal quality which allows an individual to persist toward their goal or objective, despite the presence of challenges or setbacks. It empowers the individual to not quit or capitulate when the going gets tough.
In her book, Duckworth shares how to ‘grow our grit’.
4 Ways to build your GRIT.
- Develop a fascination with what you’re aiming to achieve.
- Strive to improve each day in one facet or another.
- Remind yourself of the greater purpose.
- Adopt a growth mindset.
As highlighted by author, Kristi Loucks, “The road to success is littered with failures, but the lessons learned are crucial in plotting your course to success”.
Understand that goals or objectives worth achieving will often require us to graft or grind our way toward the destination.
Those of us who can endure the challenges and overcome the obstacles presented will surely be the ones who enjoy the spoils of success.
Time to get gritty!
